While everyone else during Arcata’s Gold Rush boom years built their homes and businesses out of wood, August Jacoby—a prominent merchant—built his new storehouse on the Arcata Plaza out of local brick and stone, with a clay and concrete roof. When it was completed in 1857, Jacoby’s Storehouse was the only fireproof structure in Humboldt County, and was a source of pride to the citizens of Arcata. His foresight was valuable—in 1875 a fire swept around the Plaza and destroyed dozens of businesses, but left the storehouse untouched.
Today, the fully restored Jacoby’s Storehouse contains a bank, several restaurants, retail shops and offices. The building is a California State Historic Landmark, the plaque for which draws attention to the original, two-foot thick stonewall.
The Arcata Community Pool offers year-round recreation and educational opportunities for people of all ages. A friendly community supported facility, the Arcata Community Pool provides one of the best environments around for fitness, education, customer service and water quality.
POOL
The Arcata Pool is a 25-yard pool with lap lanes set during all open pool hours. The 12-foot diving end and 3-foot shallow end allow for family recreation for all ages. Lap Lanes: Each of our six lap lanes are a standard 25-yard short course, which range from 4 to 7 feet deep.
JACUZZI AND SAUNA
Located on our patio, we have a hot tub and sauna. Our patio also includes two BBQ pits, picnic tables, and lounge chairs for the use of social gatherings.
AEROBIC/WEIGHT ROOM
We offer several aerobic machines, including: 2 Life Fitness treadmills, Elliptical trainer, Spinnaker recumbent bike, Lifecycle bike, 11-station weight circuit, 2 Stairmasters, Graviton, upper body machine, and 2 dumbbell sets. We also have a small stretching area with a multi-purpose ball. This room is open during all pool hours to all who are 18 years of age and older.
UV SYSTEM
This state of the art UV water treatment system is optimally used for chloramine reduction, but an additional benefit is decreased reliance on chlorine for disinfection, as UV is itself a powerful disinfectant. By eliminating chloramines, the byproduct of chlorine, eye and respiratory irritations are limited.
LOCKER ROOMS
The locker and shower areas are covered with the same PVC vinyl that covers our pool bottom. Foam soap dispensers and timed shower units have been installed with the conservation of natural resources in mind.
Go Crabs go! Founded in 1945, the Humboldt Crabs are the oldest continuously-operated summer collegiate baseball team in the country. A hallmark of summer in Arcata, the non-profit, community-oriented organization draws tens of thousands of fans out every baseball season to see the stars of the future play at The Arcata Ball Park.
While rooting for our home team, grab a hot dog, a local microbrew, some popcorn and candy for the kids all available for a steal at the Arcata Ball Park’s concession stand. If you can’t make it to the ballpark, all the Crabs games are broadcasted on 1480 AM KGOE with the radio station’s very own Ben & Hoke.
The one-of-a kind World Famous Crab Grass Band adds to the spirit of the game. Listen for standards such as “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and “Rawhide” and don’t be surprised if you hear a few quirky wind renditions of modern songs like “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley thrown into the mix.
Other fun game events are the 50/50 raffle and the Crab Races. Don’t forget to practice your backwards crab walk! Also, remember bring your jackets and blankets for when that Humboldt fog rolls in late during the evening games.
The Crabs season runs from June to August. Check out the Humboldt Crabs website for official schedule and ticketing information, in addition to information about the awesome summer Humboldt Crabs Baseball Camp for young baseball enthusiasts.
Combine your outdoor adventures with a follow up investigation at the Local Natural History Exhibit in the museum, and then move on to the fossils.
Many exhibits are hands-on including microscopes, computer programs, touch drawers, and a fossil dig box. The HSU Natural History Museum exhibits a world-class collection of over 2,000 fossils as well as displays on local natural history. Fossils range from tiny trilobites to mammoth tusks covering millions of years of life on earth.
Stunning casts on long term loan from the Cal Academy are: a 15-ft. life-sized Great White shark; a 10-ft lower leg bone from an Ultrasaurus; and a large skull of prehistoric fish Dunkleosteus.
Given to the Museum permanently is the 33-ft. wingspan Quetzalcoatlus pterosaur model that soars across the museum’s ceiling.
Regional exhibits highlight the best of nature on the North Coast including birds, insects, minerals and more! Interactive exhibits such as our touch-table and discovery boxes get all ages involved in learning. Educational programs, workshops and field trips are offered year-round.
We are your local hardware store and we are a part of your community. Each Ace store is independently owned and operated by local entrepreneurs – hard-working, passionate business owners who are involved with and, many times, reside in the communities where their stores are. There’s a good chance you’ll see your local Ace store owner at the grocery store, attending (or even sponsoring) local sports leagues, or working alongside other local business owners to better the community.
